CONCEPT STATEMENT

How to get people to connect with the Earth to make the loss of biodiversity visible?

The skin of the Earth is a tactile and sonorous experience to reconnect with the surface of the Earth we live on and understand how we have led this skin to dry, crack, fade, and in the process, to lose the unique biodiversity that allows us to live on it.

WHY

“Earth has been transformed from a diverse wilderness to a giant man-made farm” Our world in data.

The first time I landed in Italy I was shocked to see the amount of land used for agriculture. And although in my country, Colombia, it is a little less critical, Google earth showed me that this is a constant in most countries in the world.

Metaphor Concept

From something external to something internal

During the pandemic, I suffered from severe atopic dermatitis on my hands. When I saw the images of the Brazilian Amazon on Google earth, all I could think was that it looked just like my skin. I decided that this should be a tactile experience, where we could feel the different textures of the earth's surface.

PRODUCTION PROCESS

Capturing the desired sensations through materials

The use of real, natural materials was the key to triggering the need to touch the artifacts.

DATA & RESULT

Capturing the desired sensations through materials

The selected countries correspond to the 10 first megadiverse countries. This was intended to allow people to reflect on how we are destroying the most important providers of life on the planet.

INSTALLATION REACTIONS

Awakening The Senses

All the attendees stopped to feel the textures of each country."Seeing something alive in the exhibition called me immediately, the visualization is straightforward, I don't need any more information to understand it" Severin Schwaighofer
